A few years ago, Ms. Mega got a scholarship into the USA. She noticed that the schools there provided students with all kinds of books, not just boring textbooks, which is the case of many Indonesian schools.
Located 5 minutes from the beach and close to Kerinci Seblat National Park, she thinks SMAN 3 Painan students need to widen their horizons by reading more diverse books and especially those on environment, since they have to cope with illegal logging, waste management, and clearing of forest for palm oil plantations.
Recently, the school launched a program of planting 1,000 trees and was also awarded the title of Adiwiyata school (Green School) for its efforts in promoting environmental education. With this project, teachers will be required to integrate environmental education into their subjects.
The funding of this Eco-Education Center is made possible by the donors of green-books.org’s crowdfunding campaign at startsomegood.com.
