116 / Sambinasi Barat, Ngada, East Nusa Tenggara – School Eco-Library
Mr. Tasnim is teaching mathematics and taking care of the school library since 2010. Besides that, he also raises cattle.
He wants to stimulate the kids’ interest in reading books, and eventually make them protect the environment with the help of green books.
Sambinasi Barat, a village in Flores island, is located between mountains and beaches in a highland. Its 20km to the nearest town. There is no phone signal available here – to get reception, they need to hike up on the hill for 5km.
The school worked together with the local government for the mangrove procurement, they planted it in some areas near the coast. The activities received positive feedback from the kids and the community. So they are planning to do more planting and other Eco-Activities in the future.
There are fires in the grassland near the village every year. The cause of the fires is still unknown. It causes the cattle around the village to have difficulties getting enough food. This often happens during the dry season.
Tasnim hopes that the Eco-Library will help the community in the future. Especially the kids will learn about ecosystems and about saving the environment from the grassland fires.
