106 / Rancalabuj, Tangerang, Banten – Community Eco-Library
Andri is a professional educator and he established the Reading Club TBM Pelita Nazma in 2011, where the Eco-Library will be placed. Besides the regular library services, they also organize a public reading space every weekend afternoon at town park for free.
There is also a program called One House, One Book, to motivate mothers to read stories to their children. They also do beach clean-ups and mangrove planting in the area.
Rancalabuj village is located 30 minutes from Tangerang city, the nearest beach is about 10 km away. People here make a living as farmers and factory workers.
There are a lot of environmental issues there. Factories waste runoff is polluting the rice fields, which causes decline of the yields. Birds are illegally being hunted to be sold as pets. And deforestation causes dry land, decline of water level and heats.
Andri hopes to create one reading club in each village someday and to engage the locals more in the environmental issues.
Previous supporters have funded more than 60 Eco-Libraries across Indonesia. You can join the movement by donating today.
