Most of the local people work as limestone miners in the nearby mountains. From the limestone they produce construction bricks. This mining activity is very damaging for the environment. The area has become dry and it causes landslides.
In 2008, GERHAN was implemented, a national movement for land recovery. They planted teak trees, however it is still still very difficult to retain water in the dry season.
The Eco-Education Center will be located at the elementary school library. In the afternoon, the library is used as a place for illiterate older ladies and mothers to learn to read.
Pak Mukminin, a teacher at the school who will take care of the Eco-Education Center says: “I hope to open the children’s horizons by reading more books about the environment. Like that, they become more aware about the issues they face in their village. I want to change the kids’ attitude towards the environment, to make them love the it and to prevent damage in the future.”
