Bu Yeni is teaching science at an elementary school in a small village near Batukaru Mountain, surrounded by rice fields and plantations.
She says that the environment suffers under people burning their plastic waste and throwing their garbage in the river or around the plantation area. She adds: “The children and the community have a lack of motivation to learn about sustainable practices.
Once I introduced them to waste management, they were applying what they learned. For a short time they actually separated the waste. But it didn’t last very long. We need a new impulse.”
Bu Yeni is very motivated to change this situation and is willing to dedicate her time for the Eco-Education Center during school from Monday to Saturday at 7am-12 pm. She would implement the Eco-Activities on Saturdays as extracurricular activities.
