Mr. Mardan, was born in Bengkulu. In 2019, he was assigned as a teacher for 6th grade at MIN 2 Musi Banyuasin, one of the elementary-level schools on the Lubuk Linggau, South Sumatera, which is located not far from oil palm and rubber plantations.
When first time he came to this school, Mardan was concerned about the lack of facilities and minimum waste management at the school. There was so much trash everywhere. The students were not accustomed throwing trash in the bins because there were none available in the class. And it is getting worse because the location of the school is close to the village, sometimes plastic waste from the village can also pollute the school environment. So far, the people there handling waste by burning it. That is the only way that they can do because the nearest waste bank is located about 2 hours from school.
Mardan got the information about our Zero Waste School from his friend, and he was very motivated to try the program with his students. He hopes that through this program his students will understand how dangerous waste is if not handled properly, especially disposable plastic waste.
He tries to implement Zero Waste School Program with his students of grade 5 and 6. Mardan hopes that he can continue to do various kinds of environmental activities with Green-Books.org. He hopes with this kind of activities, in the future, his students will care more about the environment.
