063 / Kobak Rante Village, Bekasi, West Java
Mr. Soleh lives at Kobak Rante Village, Bekasi, West Java. The school where he teaches is located near the landfill. Domestic waste that is being transported to the landfill is causing a bad smell and the smoke from the waste burning spread around the village. It’s a thick smoke and very unhealthy for the villagers.
In order to improve the village’s healthier lives, Soleh introduces environmental sustainability activities to his 6th-grade elementary students like planting organic vegetables and herbs.
But that’s not enough. Soleh met Green-Books.org through its website and has become one of its Eco-Education Center since 2015. Green-Books.org eco-activities have helped Soleh a lot in educating his 29 students about sustainability.
“My dream is to make our alumni more aware of sustainability so they can help save the environment. That’s why I implemented the program in my school, to share the message with my students, who then share it with their families and social circles. After starting the curriculum, they have started bringing in reusable water bottles, to save money and reduce single-use plastics.” said Soleh.
In the future, Soleh hopes to meet and interact with other local educators in order to gain knowledge on teaching children about sustainability.
They implemented the Zero Waste School Program in 2019, the program was sponsored by our friends at Solace Float.
